The collection consists of papers of Edmund Asa Ware, as President of Atlanta University, from 1867-1885. Includes correspondence, business, and legal papers documenting the establishment of Atlanta University and its emergence as a central institution in Georgia for higher education for African Americans. The materials include information on Ware's efforts to establish a public school system in Georgia (1868); the erection of Atlanta University's first buildings; and financial affairs including scholarship funds, donations, and the first appropriation of annual funds to Atlanta University from the Georgia General Assembly (1874).
